"Block by Block"
Community Art Project + Installation

The "Block by Block" collaboration featured eighth grade students from educator Shiela O'Rorke's Campus International School, women from Norma Herr's Women Shelter, Campus District, Across the Lines, and myself. 

The "Block by Block" project explored the relationship between community members who are connected by proximity, but not necessarily through conversations or civic engagement. The students from CIS engaged with women from the shelter by sharing ideas, and discussing the overall scope and direction of the project. Throughout the process the group was encouraged to collaborate and share their insights in order to build an inclusive partnership, and cohesive art installation.

The concept and final artwork was conceived to mimic the gridline structure of the city streets, and also serve as a metaphor for building and intersecting with one another. The individual blocks were painted to reflect ideas pertaining to community, visions for the future, and place within community. The completed blocks were then linked to each other, creating a design that represented integration, reliance, a
nd unity.

"Hand-Style United"
Public Art Installation

The “Hand-styles United” project was conceived by Campus District Inc, Across The Lines, and Guy-Vincent. Several creative workshops featuring fifth grade students from the Cleveland International School, along with women from the Norma Herr Women’s Shelter were the starting point of the collaboration. After several iterations, we decided that creating a stylized signature could serve as the identifier for oneself. Guy-Vincent explains “We wanted to create an installation that spoke to the idea of identity without using portraits. Besides fingerprints, ones own signature can serve as a unique identifier for individuals. Additionally, by merging the hand-style’s together, we underscored the collaborative process between the students and women.” Not only are the students from CIS and the women from Norma Herr neighbors, the final artwork serves as a physical manifestation of their shared experience and collaboration.

"Street Pole Project"
Community + Public Art Project
​Campus District Area

The "Street Pole" project was another exciting community based public art project for 2019. Residents, stakeholders, and community members, provided ideas, designs, and participated in the project. The project brought dynamic splashes of color along the Campus District arts area. The street poles serve as a way to identify the burgeoning arts district.

"The Dreams We Have"

Norman Herr Women's Shelter

Fine artist Guy-Vincent, has been busy transforming the downtown landscape with public artwork. Most recent examples are two murals at the Norma Herr Women’s Shelter. These large-scale public art projects are part of a series designed to beautify the downtown area, engage community members, and bring additional visibility to the arts district. 

“The murals located at Norma Herr, reflect the women’s desire to surround themselves with beauty, while providing a colorful and inspirational respite from their often challenging personal situations” says Guy-Vincent. Bold bright colors, and images of nature, wrap around the outside of the historic Art Deco landmark building. The designs are a result of collaborations between women from the shelter, Across the Lines, and Campus District Inc. For months, art classes were held at Jane Finley’s Across the Lines studio, along with Guy-Vincent, and Rachel Oscar, from Campus District. Their objectives were to engage with the women, get feedback on what inspires them visually, and have them participate in the process. 

The result is, a sweeping and beautiful design that reflects optimism and strength. Traits that were demonstrated week after week, in the art classes. Besides, providing ideas about the murals, the women found the classes liberating and extremely helpful in tapping into their creativity and self-expression. Upcoming projects include, a monumental mural for the Campus International School, as well as, street pole paintings throughout the campus district arts area. GV stated, “For the past several years, I’ve taught art classes to marginalized members of the community. In that time, I’ve witnessed the incredible impact and positive influence that art-making can have, to both the individual and collective community. The ability to provide a positive impact upon individuals, and enhance the cityscape, is something that is both humbling and inspiring.”

IDENTITY a site-specific public art installation exploring our relationship with ethnicity race, culture, and gender. In addition to the large-scale sculptural works, two monumental videos featuring individuals who live, work, and play in the central downtown district.

ART WALL
Public Art Installation
University Hospital

ART WALL featuring large-scale portraits of patients, doctors, staff and medical imagery during the renovation and expansion of University Hospital's Vision 2010 initiative. This public art project served as a visual bridge connecting the residents, employees, visitors, and community.
